Favourite TV Sitcoms

The format for this section was simple. After I worked on British Comedians I decided that I would add to it with a sub section called ‘TV Sitcoms'. But whereas in ‘comedians’ I had put in a few that were not my personal favourites but I thought because they were so popular they deserved a place, in this site, I am putting in just my personal favourites.
Some are American shows and some are British. They range from the fifties to today. Most are in the seventies and that is when I think the UK had some of the best comedy.
Readers that come to this site will not always agree with my choice, and there are no doubt many that I have left out that deserve a place. But, have a look through and see what I have put in and what you think of my choice. You can email me using the link at the bottom of this page or the ‘links’ page that I have put in.
I was born in 1948 and we did not get our first TV until the late 1950’s if anyone can believe that today! So of course as the TV only received the BBC that was what we and the rest of the UK watched.
So we watched ‘I Love Lucy’ ,‘Bilko’ and ‘The Army Game’ for the sitcoms when we first got our TV. Of course it was in B&W as that was what televisions were in the UK then.
In the sixties along came ‘Steptoe and Son’, ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ and ‘On the Buses’. (My own favourite back then as my father was a bus driver and I became one in the 70’s)
Then in came the seventies and that I thought and still do think bought some of the best situation comedy on TV. We had ‘Bless This House’, ‘Are You Being Served’?, ‘Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em’, ‘The Last of the Summer Wine’, ‘Happy Days’, ‘Porridge’, ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’, ‘Fawlty Towers’ and ‘Open all Hours’,
Into the eighties now and three of the best were ,Birds of a Feather, Hi-
The nineties as far as I personally was concerned brought in a dumbing down of comedy and sitcoms. I have put in two that I considered brilliant and they were ‘One foot in the grave’ and ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. Most of the rest were not for me.
Here we are in the new millennium and for me at least the age of good comedy has gone. I have put in two that we enjoy watching a lot and they are ‘my Family’ and the one that is the best of the lot in these days of ‘alternative’ comedy and that is ‘Outnumbered’. That is just brilliant and proves it can be done.
